The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released for the sectors interested an environmental impact study of micro-power plant : Ravine du Sud and Saut Mathurine. This 446-pages study was conducted in partnership with the Haitian government as part of the pilot project to promote hydropower “Hydropower development on a small scale in Haiti (Micro Hydro)”.
This study considers two dams in southern Haiti. It is part of an effort to contribute to the development of legal texts allowing the protection of potential investors in the hydropower field. The project will also work to strengthen the State Electricity of Haiti (EDH) through the establishment of bodies with reliable data and statistics on all waterways in order to allow potential investors make informed decisions.
This study has already received a notice of no objection from the Government of Haiti through the Ministry of Environment (MDE) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR) and reveals that these dams will have a significant positive impact on the socio-economic life of the departments concerned.
Recall that Haiti is the country with the lowest electrification rates in Latin America and the Caribbean, at a high cost for a population largely living in poverty.
Until today, EDH, manages several hydroelectric plants with a total installed capacity of 61 MW, the largest remains that of Péligre. Apart from power plants already installed, Haiti’s hydroelectric potential that could be developed is estimated at more than 150 MW or about three times the capacity of the central Péligre.
Considering that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) can not be achieved without a substantial increase in energy availability, the challenge is to address this request without dramatically increasing greenhouse gas emissions globally. It is also in the sense that this initiative shows all its relevance. Indeed, it will promote investment in this area in order to maximize the value of existing water resources in the country.
UNDP invites interested sectors to take knowledge of the contents of this study to galvanize a critical mass around this source of potential wealth.
