The Head of the United Nations mission in Haiti Helen Meagher La Lime met with Senator Joseph Lambert (KONA – Sud’Est) and since, the lawmaker has changed his tune in terms of his opposition to President Jovenel Moise.

The Head of the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti met with Senator Lambert on Thursday, August 22, 2019.

Mr. Lambert, contacted by the newspaper, Le Nouvelliste, confirmed the meeting but did not reveal the details to the nation.

He did say, “I want to keep fighting to push the president to reach an agreement in the national interest before it’s too late.” This is a departure from his comments made earlier in the week where he threatened to take to the streets with the opposition. In those statements, Mr. Lambert said he would cause the president’s resignation in two week’s time.

Le Nouvelliste contacted diplomatic sources who seem to have only said that they have “concerns about the socio-political and economic situation of the country”. The newspaper added that its sources felt that there was an urgent need for a return to institutional normality in Haiti as quickly as possible.

Off the record, a senator interviewed by the newspaper said, without necessarily having a discussion with Senator Lambert, that the international community, those aligned with the U.S. position, support President Jovenel Moise and Mr. Lambert’s change of position “naturally aroused concern.”

Le sénateur Joseph Lambert, fraîchement passé à l’opposition au président Jovenel Moïse, et la patronne de la Minujusth, Helen Meagher La Lime, se sont entretenus jeudi 22 août 2019.

Le sénateur Joseph Lambert, contacté par le journal, a confirmé la tenue de la rencontre. Il a cependant refusé d’en révéler les détails. « Je veux continuer à me battre pour pousser le président à parvenir à un accord dans l’intérêt  national avant qu’il ne soit trop tard », a seulement indiqué le puissant sénateur du Sud-Est.

Le journal a contacté des sources diplomatiques qui ont confié « leurs inquiétudes face à la situation sociopolitique et économique du pays ». Ces sources ont estimé qu’il y a urgence d’un retour au plus vite à la normalité institutionnelle en Haïti.

Off the record, un sénateur interrogé par le journal a affirmé, sans nécessairement avoir des discussions avec le sénateur Joseph Lambert, que l’international, aligné sur la position américaine, supporte le président Jovenel Moïse. Le divorce fracassant du sénateur Joseph Lambert d’avec le président Jovenel Moïse a « suscité naturellement des inquiétudes ».
