For once Bill Quigley has hit the nail on the head. For a guy who is usually promoting bums like Jean-Juste he has written a really good article on the present situation in Haiti.
Ambassador Merten has obviously been on another planet. We had hoped he would be some improvement over the previous American Ambassador Jeanette Sanderson who reminded many of a fat German housewife. She was also completely and totally disconnected with the Haitian reality.
The new American Embassy is an impersonal fortress that allows its occupants to remain disconnected from the Haitian society. It even has a private community, built a couple of hundred yards away, in which Americans can live the same life they live in the States, with all of the amenities. Should they wish, they can spend their entire tours without ever meeting a Haitian, other than embassy staff members.
The Haitian situation remains a disaster, with a small percentage of the victims living any sort of an acceptable condition.
USAID has always been a dysfunctional organization, created to give employment to retired American government employees. If you want to squander money, give it to USAID. They once got involved in a coffee tree project and blew $5,000,000 without planting a single coffee tree. There is a lesson here.
Haiti needs immediate and effective assistance to prevent an accelerating disaster on America’s doorstep. The coming rainy season is about to magnify the problems and show that Ambassador Merten had his head inserted in another part of his anatomy when he gave a thumbs up to the relief efforts.
No need to be nasty to the handicapped.
The American embassy is working to its limits, which – on a scale of 1 to 10 in the competitive private world – would rate a 1, unless fractions and negative quantities are allowed.
Alvin Adams, and his predecessor Brunson McKinley, were the last real ambassadors from the States. What has followed must be viewed as an embarrassment, especially Brian Dean Curran who was the boyfriend/girlfriend of Haiti journalist Adyjeangardy.
If this is the best the State Department has – we are in trouble. I can remember the comments by Kurt von Fischer, Austria’s Consul to Haiti. He once said..”The American Embassy in Haiti is the cesspool if the State Department.”… and that was in 1983.
Let’s trade the embassy for 300 Marines without steel helmets, flak jackets and rifles.
Things would turn around – Instantly!!
Thank you for the sound critique. Me and my neighbor were just setting up to do some research about this. I am very glad to see such great info being shared freely out there.
