COMMENT: HAITIAN-TRUTH.ORG

It is always pleasant to see photos to remind us what our leaders look like since they seem to spend more time building up their American Airlines Miles Account than dealing with the specific and major challenging problems, within Haiti.  If President Martelly and Prime Minister Lamothe decided to burn their passports, and stay inside Haiti, things would be more positive for the Nation, than with them acting as global tourists.

In fact, the concentration on tourism, without security, is an unrealistic concept, based upon quicksand. One must prepare the garden plot, before planting the seeds, otherwise the seeds will germinate, and then die from lack of nourishment. Hotels, aimed at HIGH END TOURISTS – such as the OASIS, built in a messy area of Petion-Ville won’t meet the business challenge, without further financial support.  Who would fly into Haiti, travel the bumpy-dusty roads to Petion-Ville to pay $300 per night to be stuck in an island within an insecure area?

Tourism is a great focus, a focus that delivers hard cash into the economy. Unfortunately, the Minister of Tourism has the wrong focus.  For example, Jacmel  is a really nice place but what do you do once you are there? You surely don’t go swimming because the waters there have very, very dangerous currents.

If I was going to build a tourist infrastructure, I would pick and area that I could control, without problems of population movement into the chosen area.

For example, I  would focus on La Gonave and fully develop its possibilities. This development could then lift the rest of Haiti on the hard cash generated.

Unfortunately, those involved with the Haitian tourist concept have not looked at it from the foreigner’s viewpoint.

Even the LOGO selected shows this. It is the worst possible design because it says bsolutely nothing about Haiti. It could be the logo for a pineapple manufacturer, a tampax brand, Hawaii, or a zillion other products. Whenever I have shown this LOGO to anyone and asked what they were reminded of, when they saw it…ABSOLUTELY NO ONE MENTIONED HAITI!!!   It is a marketing failure when you have to mount a complex advertising campaign to get people to recognize the logo as being a Haitian promotional tool.

That is backwards.

Unfortunately, backwards… is often the Haitian approach to many things.
