WASHINGTON, D.C. (sentinel.ht) – Less than three months before the first ballot is cast for elections more than four years overdue, the U.S. State Department said it judged the time “opportune” to change the electoral calendar.

The comments were made by Haiti Special Adviser Thomas Adams on Thursday and were unexpected, given that the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) had not announced that it was considering any modifications, au contraire, had seven days earlier reiterated its intention to maintain the calendar in place.

According to AlterPresse, Adams was speaking to a group of Haitian journalists in Washington, including Kendi Zidor, of Radio Solidarity when he made the statement. He mentioned the concerns of several sectors who believe Haiti does not have the financial means to organize three rounds of elections.

A figure of $30 million, was reported to be given by the special adviser, as to the savings in losing a day of elections. The U.S. announced a $15 to $50 million [US] contribution to the holding of elections that are estimated to cost $60 million in Haiti.

None the less, Thomas Adams said he believes elections will be held in Haiti in 2015 and it is up to the Haitian people to ultimately decide on a modification to the calendar.

Transition Fears

After years of steadfast support of the Obama administration for a Haitian government that had made no real steps towards organizing elections in Haiti, a significant swath of the population is concerned that President Michel Martelly and faction of diplomats calling themselves the “Core Group” would prefer a “transition” as oppose to an election.

One of the top presumptive candidates for the presidency, former Senator Jean-Charles Moïse, has been using it as a rallying cry for public vigilance against further degradation to democracy in Haiti, peace and stability in the region.

Some 18 months ago, Martelly started preparations for his collapse, even though he thought these neat moves were first steps to prolongation. His ongoing – 4 year – delay of elections, allowing the collapse of Haiti’s structured institutions was seen as a way in which to retain control through a surrogate.

His preliminary concept seems to have seen Laurent Lamothe move into the Presidency. However, more than a year ago, Martelly was telling palace insiders that Lamothe would not take over.

The real turning point was Lamothe’s arrest of La Familia and Recif, leaders of Gang Galil, feared in the kidnap and cocaine business. The direct threat to Martelly’s brother-in-law – Kiko – was also a factor that weighed on the scales.

Lamothe’s Presidency could have provided a buffer between Martelly’s friends, and the International Community. Now any change of this is wiped out and many arrests may follow Michel Martelly’s removal from power before his term is finished.

Michel Martelly’s PWOMIS SE DET has been a hollow charade that played on his poor people’s Hope. Martelly, and his crew, have raped the treasury, becoming mega-millionaires while the Haitian poor, who supported Martelly have had their hopes for kid’s schooling dashed, their standard of living destroyed and famine stretching its shadow across the land as money – better spent on rice-and-beans for kids, has gone into the Martelly and company bank accounts.

Time for Martelly to fade away and give Haiti a chance.
