Marriott breaks ground in Haiti for country’s first 4-star branded hotel-Added COMMENTARY By Haitian-Truth

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti –  Construction crews in Haiti are building what is expected to be the country’s first four-star branded hotel.

The $45 million Marriott hotel is expected to create some 200 jobs and open in early 2015. It will feature 175 rooms and will be located in Port-au-Prince.

The hotel is one of several planned for the capital and surrounding areas as Haiti tries to recover from a devastating 2010 earthquake that officials say killed 300,000 people.

Digicel Group Chairman Denis O’Brien said at a groundbreaking event Wednesday that he believes the hotel will help attract more foreign visitors. The company is an investor in the project.

Marriott International CEO and President Arne Sorenson said the company also is working with Haiti’s tourism and education officials to improve hospitality training.

Just what we need. A Four Star hotel when the last tourist I saw was back in 1985. They say it is for ONG and foreign workers, but how many of these can afford Four Star prices? We need schools for kids, jobs for adults and rice/beans for the hungry…. perhaps a few houses for the people still in tents from the earthquake of 2010.

  1. Yes, they are claiming to plan 1200 or more new hotel rooms. And none care about the Haitian people who will never see the interiors unless they are there as staff, underpaid staff.

  2. yes, it’is a good news we need a very nice hotel in Haiti like Marriott hotel.we may have Haitien who own very small hotel in bad conditions, no maintenance who not like that idea, anyway they can’t stop that.
