Our Haitian sources have a frightening story to tell.
Iranian President Ahmadinejad has dispatched his senior embassy personnel from Cuba for a clandestine meeting with his friend President Rene Preval and some close Preval insiders.
Rather than draw attention, by staying at a hotel, the Iranians, and Cubans are housed in a guest house on Thomasin 37, run by Foreign Affairs Minister Rey’s daughter. They are scheduled to depart on Saturday.
What benefit for Haiti could a visit from a bunch of Iranians and Cubans generate, so close to an election?
Probably nothing positive.
What game is Preval playing, after the Constitutional February 7, 2011 end to his presidency??
Is he trying to import an outside team to create election chaos, that can then be blamed on someone else – after the Iranians slip away?
Whatever the reason for Ahmadinejad’s interference Haiti will not have any positive benefit.
When all of the dust has settled, everyone must remember that Preval and Rey invited these people into the country.
Maybe he is going to help Preval build an atomic bomb.
Preval has stolen enough money to finance the project.
Haiti has zero room for maneuvre. It is a shame since it would suit Haiti fine to play off one power with another. It certainly worked for various countries such as Indonesia, Yugoslavia, and even Egypt during the Cold War. Iran is too far away to be of any significant importance. It would more logical for Hugo Chavez to have a hand in Haitian affairs. However, the US would never stand for interference in it’s personal fiefdom. In any case, Haiti has hardly benefitted from a bunch of Americans and Canadians meddling in the affairs of Haiti. I wish China would muscle in Haiti. Maybe the Haitians would get a fairer deal. If the Americans wish to really Haiti, so much the better but over 200 years of history have shown that the US government has only had contempt for Haiti and Haitians. Luckily, that cannot be said for various individual Americans.
Preval is playing a dangerous game with the US! It’s one thing to mess with Castro and Chavez but when you try to give US archenemy Iran a foot hold in haiti that is less than 2hrs away, The US is not having it. Preval need to watch it, he doesn’t want to go in exile and he doesn’t want to go to jail, if he he keep playing this game he might get both in one swoop, he might find himself in the Guantanamo bay prison!
