  1. I understand this isn’t the first big theft at OXFAM.

Haiti needs to have some control over the 11,000 or more criminal ONGs

The man should have been stopped from leaving the country. Since he is gone, they should arrest those responsible for his escape from justice.

Oxfam official quits post in Haiti

    Saturday, 13 August 2011

Oxfam GB’s country director in Haiti has resigned amid an inquiry into allegations of staff misconduct, the charity said.

An Oxfam spokesman said Roland Van Hauwermeiren felt he should take “managerial responsibility” because the alleged misconduct “occurred while he was heading the programme” in Haiti.

An internal investigation was launched into a “small number” of its workers in the Caribbean country. They are not thought to be British nationals.

The spokesman added that the allegations “are not connected to any incidents of fraud” and the investigation is due to be completed shortly.

The charity said the money raised following the earthquake in Haiti – approximately 98 million US dollars – has not been affected.

Oxfam has been working in Haiti since 1978. It helped about 700,000 people in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake that hit the country in January 2010.

More than 500,000 Haitians have been further assisted by Oxfam’s cholera response programme.

WHAT COMPLETE AND UTTER BULLSHIT, SUGGESTING THAT FRAUD OR SOME CRIME IS NOT INVOLVED. IN MY OPINION THEFT IS A CRIME. Roland Van Hauwermeiren SHOULD HAVE BEEN HELD IN hAITI WHILE THE CRIME WAS INVESTIGATED AND CHARGED IF HE WAS SEEN TO BE GUILTY, AS THE INVESTIGATION SUGGESTS AT THIS TIME.

SOMEONE SHOULD DO A FORENSIC AUDIT OF OXFAM’S BOOKS.

THE CRIME IS BIGGER THAN ADMITTED.

  3. Oxfam spokeswoman Ana Arendar said. Arendar declined to say when Hauwermeiren resigned, saying it was confidential.
The British charity announced last week that it had suspended several staff members pending the outcome of an internal probe. Arendar did not elaborate on the charges, citing an ongoing investigation that is expected to conclude by next month.
The spokesman added that the allegations “are not connected to any incidents of fraud” and the investigation is due to be completed shortly.

This material was lifted from news releases.

Arendar is lying on behalf of OXFAM

Theft is a crime and it does affect the millions collected for OXFAM when the theft involves these funds.

OXFAM hopes everyone will forget about this outrage by the time their investigation is “finished.” OXFAM already knows the details in Haiti, according to their staff here, and other ONGs.

A felony has been committed and OXFAM staff, including the Country Director were/are involved.

  4. And all of these ONGs resist any effort to see where they really spend OUR money.
For example, the Red Cross collected almost $300,000,000.00 as a result of our earthquake but avoided spending the money or explaining what happened.
    Time passes and everyone forgets.
Another disaster happens and the focus is changed.

  5. There can be no doubt that this case involves misconduct, bringing the name of Oxfam into disrepute and some degree of fraud (though probably not on the scale of $10M). But the objectionable aprt of all this is the obscurity of the process – the complete lack of transparence, which must inevitably create a break trust with donors, the public and beneficiaries.

  6. External operational and financial audits would certainly not be inappropriate. Does it not seem the leader has “fallen on his sword”… ?
