The Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, accompanied by Vanneur Pierre, the Minister of National Education and technical advisers, left the country yesterday Tuesday for an official visit to the United States from April 17 to 23, to establish new partnerships to strengthen the Haitian education system.
At the prestigious University Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT) of Boston, the Head of Government will have meetings on the project “Kreyòl-based and Technology-enhanced STEM education”. This project funded by the US National Science Foundation and the MIT, focuses on the use of Creole, of Open Educational Resources and New Technologies of Information and Communication (NTIC) in education, and aims to promote the learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in Haitian schools and universities.
In this context, a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between the Haitian government, represented by the Ministry of National Education and MIT-Haiti Initiative, which aims to modernize and democratize education in Haiti, from new tools of communication.
The Prime Minister will also visit the Harvard University and Columbia University, two of the largest higher education institutions in the United States, part of the group of eight universities in the Ivy League where he will intervene before an audience of experts and students.
During his tour, the Head of State will also go to Washington DC to meet among others, Luis Alberto Moreno, President of the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) and former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, recently appointed by the UN Secretary General, Special Adviser in Education for Haiti.
Laurent Lamothe, also Minister of Planning and External Cooperation, is expected at Center For Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) where he will speak about the concrete results achieved by his administration and obstacles overcome, regarding the reconstruction efforts.
Moreover, this Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Prime Minister Lamothe will interact with the Haitian community of New England, at Reggie Lewis Athletic Center, located 1350 Tremont St Roxbury Crossing, MA 02120 – Multipurpose room.
