Armed raiders attack prison, free inmates in Haiti

AP NEWS:

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Officials say an armed gang attacked a prison in Haiti’s capital and freed an undetermined number of inmates.

Among those who escaped in in Sunday’s late morning raid on the prison is Clifford Brandt, a member of a prominent Haitian family who faces charges of kidnapping.

Police spokesman Gary Desrosiers tells the local AlterPresse news agency that it’s not clear how many of the 800 inmates at the Croix des Bouquests prison fled.

Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe went to the prison after the escape, but made no comments.

Brandt runs a car dealership and is the son Fritz Brandt, head of a prominent Haitian family that has extensive holdings in export-import businesses. The son is accused in the kidnapping of at least two children.
