While President Rene Garcia Preval has effectively derailed most efforts to initiate reconstruction projects in Haiti, following the disastrous January 12 earthquake that killed almost 500,000 of his citizens, injured another 250,000, created 50,000 amputees, destroyed 240,000 buildings and left 1.5 million homeless….he has done nothing to slow an accelerating cocaine traffic through his nation.
A foreign embassy, and experts within MINUSTAH, estimate that the traffic has tripled over the past few months, aided and abetted by Rene Preval and his puppet Claudy Gassant. Gassant should be prosecuting drug traffickers, but he has given those loyal to Preval free rein.
This is just another example of Preval’s cynical view of the world. The traffickers are paying cash contributions to his electoral war chest.
He has also promised them immunity when his chosen candidate captures the November elections.
Why the American embassy does not cancel Claudy Gassant’s visa is one of those things thinking people cannot understand.
This situation will complicate Preval’s earlier efforts to negotiate immunity for himself, and his wife. Elizabeth is vulnerable to tax evasion charges in the United States.
Memories are short – or shortened when convenient to the American government. They should recall Preval’s first presidency when cocaine traffickers had to go to the palace….be driven to the docks in Prevals car…pick up their drugs…go back to the palace where they paid a “tax.”
Perhaps the game is more subtle now, but the game is ongoing and Preval is a major benefactor.

I can recall the time Gassant locked up two members of the Brandt family for supposedly issuing false papers in an import case.
This was not true.
She had been the elder Brandt’s mistress and he scorned her, so she had him arrested and held in a room with no toilet facilities other than small plastic bags – actually sandwich bags.
The fact that she was – by this time – servicing Preval, had no influence on her actions.
Elizabeth Delatour would be said to have “round heels” in any other society. She has been a mistress so many times that courts might suggest she is something else.
