PRIME MINISTER LAMOTHE CALLS MEETING WITH ELECTORAL COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES, MINUSTAH AND OTHERS FOR PLANNING OF ELECTIONS.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) – A meeting on elections that were due to be held in November 2011, was held on Monday with electoral council members and the international community, at the behest of the Haitian Prime Minister, who received an assessment of 300 million HTG ($6.8 million [US]) in operating costs for election officials to administrate Haiti’s next contests.

Monday, June 24, 2013. Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe presided, in his offices, a meeting attended by, among others, tghe Minister of Justice, Jean Renel Sanon, Minister of the Interior and Local Communities David Bazile, the President of the Transitional College of the Permanent Electoral Council (CTCEP), Emmanuel Menard, the Senior Director in Haiti of the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP) Sophie de Caen and the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General Ban Ki Moon for the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) Carl Alexandre.

The objective of this meeting was to discuss arrangements to be adopted to facilitate the organization of upcoming senatorial and local elections in the country. These elections, that were due in November 2011, will renew one third of the Senate and more than 100 local government officials.

The Haitian Head of Government said in his remarks after the meetings that he continues to invest in all suitable steps to regulate and allow the CTCEP to start the electoral machine.

In this regard, the Head of Government has established a working group of international partners, representatives of the Prime Minister and the CTCEP in order to facilitate the immediate implementation of decisions and projects related to the conduct of elections.

Prime Minister Lamothe which reiterates its commitment to credible elections in the country, working to ensure that all partners involved in the process play fully their part to ensure the holding of fair elections in Haiti.

The Electoral Law

According to CTCEP President Emmanuel Menard, different sectors will be invited to be presented with the electoral law and provide their input. These meeting should begin this week.

After those meetings, the CTCEP will forward the Electoral Law to the Executive for its input and lastly, the Electoral Law will arrive at the Parliament where it may be officially voted into law.

By this point, the date, and methods for the next elections will be set in stone.
