As the Preval-created constitutional crisis continues to block presentation of a Prime Minister and Cabinet, the various sides continue to argue and delay.
At the end of today’s debate, Haiti was promised a constitutional settlement by “next week” that will allow the road block’s removal and a start to Martelly’s real governance. The plan is to publish, in the Moniteur, the draft constitution accepted by Parliament, before Preval’s departure. Preval filed an entirely different draft which Deputies and Senators seem to have signed, without reading the amendments. Or, they signed, having read them and did so to create the crisis we now face.
In either case, they actions were criminal.
Now Martelly has told them that “He is the power!!” He also said that the Chamber of Deputies and Senate are, and always have, treated Haiti like a cake and wanted to share it, each having a piece. Martelly said that the nation is not going to be treated in this manner.
Pierre Raymond Dumas, a local writer, and political commentator, recently said that the process in which Deputies and Senators expected payment to do their work – sometime $50,000 – $100,000 and more – must stop.
It would seem that Martelly is drawing a line on the ground and is ready to declare war.
The mob is getting restless. They can see that Martelly is paralyzed and may take things into their own hands in a violent movement against their elected representatives.
The next week could be interesting.
However, Martelly must control his ego, and that of his wife, in order to retain the peoples’ affection. Sophia Martelly allowing her bodyguards to beat voters, because of a minor car accident, is not really very smart.
Recently, Martelly asked a senior member of his political party to come to his residence, for a meeting. They guy arrived, and was asked for his driver’s license. This was carried into the house and returned by a security guard who said Martelly was not there. This message was passed by Sophia.
They guy left and went back to the party headquarters. Martelly called and asked why he had not come to the house and, when he heard what happened, asked the guy to return. Seems as though the party leader refused, saying, “If you want to see me, come to the office…”
Martelly’s security team is much too aggressive, keeping friends and supporters away with excessive force. This is a sure way to lose public affection. If Martelly fears his supporters, he comes into the category of Aristide.
Duvalier travels around with one guy.
There is no danger but sometimes having a bunch of heavies push people around salves an ego.
Martelly is running out of time. If he wants to retain his support, he must control his insiders and take on some competent advisers…..especially someone who can spell.
