Heavy wind and waves flip over Haitian ferry; 5 dead as officials look for 7 others missing

Washington Post:

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitian authorities are looking for seven people missing after a ferry capsized in a bay west of Haiti’s capital. Five others are known to have died, while five people have been rescued.

Nadia Lochard at Haiti’s civil protection says heavy wind and high waves flipped the ferry over Monday night after it left La Gonave about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Port-au-Prince.

Lochard says the boat was transporting charcoal, bananas and other goods to Archaie, a coastal town 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of the capital.

She announced the accident Tuesday.
