Carlo Collin

Haitian construction worker Carlo Collin, 21, who first emigrated from Haiti to the Dominican Republic when he was 15, stands in front of a building he is working with a team of men to reconstruct in Santo Domingo. Collin, whose passport has expired, said he has had to pay bribes to police to stay in the country on seven separate occasions. Collin said working in construction is his only option in Santo Domingo. “If you’re Haitian, you don’t have any value in this land,” Collin said. (Stephanie Snyder)
