PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti –  Haitian electoral officials announced Monday that a new presidential election will be held in October with additional safeguards in place to avoid the widespread fraud that marred last year’s voting and led to the imposition of an interim government.

The first round of the new presidential election will be Oct. 9 and, if no one secures a majority, a runoff would follow on Jan. 8, Electoral Council President Leopold Berlanger said at a news conference.

All 54 candidates who ran in the disputed October election would be permitted to run again, Berlanger said.

The CEP announced a series of measures aimed at reducing the opportunity for fraud in the upcoming election including an end to the ability of poll workers and observers to vote wherever they want, a practice that many believe led to the large number of multiple voting by individuals.

The top finisher last time was Jovenel Moise, from the party of former President Michel Martelly. He was trailed by Jude Celestin, a businessman tied to the president before Martelly’s term.

But a widespread perception of fraud led to the cancellation of the second round and appointment of interim President Jocelerme Privert.

Last month, a special commission reported significant fraud and professional misconduct. The panel examined 25 percent of the roughly 13,000 tally sheets from polling stations and found about 628,000 untraceable votes.

This is Democracy, Haitian Style.

If you don’t like the results, cry foul and do it again – and perhaps again, and again.

Jovenel Moise was the top vote getter in the fist round, followed by Jude Celestin. They should have met in a run off, but this was derailed. Celestin refused to play, knowing he would be massacred by a real, well supervised ballot.

Now we have Francois Benoit sell out to the Privert team. The October 2015 first round was a good one, with some minor flaws of ineptitude. These minor problems soon became FRAUD MASSIVE!!! even though unbiased, international observers said the vote was a good one.

On May 19, Aristide hosted a meeting of CEP members, and the Chief of Cabinet from Privert’s office. Aristide insisted the Jovenel must be knocked out of the vote.

And this is exactly what is about to happen, even though Jovenel won the first ballot, free and fair.

The people, the common people want Jovenel.

and reduce their criminal influence on our society.

Another year wasted by Privert, “The Hero of La Scerie” the guy who coordinated Aristide’s massacre of innocents in St Marc during February, 2004.

Haiti deserves better but, unfortunately, money will again control the sequence of affairs.

  1. A giant step backward for the perennially “stalled” democratic process in Haiti. In terms of pregnancy and birth, it is as if Cher Haiti were a woman pregnant with triplets now approaching a near full-term pregnancy with two already still-born babies; the survival of the remaining baby is highly doubtful due to rising toxicity in the womb. Only prayers can save this baby; previous outcomes indicate this baby is doomed.
