Haiti - FLASH : Bad weather, many areas under water

Since Friday, Haiti is under the influence of a localized front on the eastern part of Cuba that influences weather conditions on the whole of the Caribbean region causing heavy rains fell in several departments of Haiti, including the North, North West, North East, Artibonite, West, Central and Grand Anse, causing flooding and extensive damage.

On the night of Friday to Saturday heavy rains rolled down the Morne Puilboreau on the side that faces the Artibonite Department, a beginning landslide was reported. La Quinte river and drain of Ceinture Biénac are in flood; on the Lower Artibonite rains caused a flood beginning to Blockhaus (St. Marc).

At the exit of Ennery in the North. Traffic though difficult, is still open on this line; Motorists are asked to greater vigilance. Showers are recorded at Cap-Haitien, in Gros Morne, Ennery and Marmelade no damage reported yet.

Torrential rains that fell on Friday afternoon on the city of Baradère have resulted in substantial flooding especially in the city center where 215 houses are affected. Saturday, the situation has not improved, the rain continued, the St-Pierre Church, the presbytery, the town hall and the police station are inundated. Road sections connecting Baradères and Petit-trou are inaccessible for the time and traffic is prohibited.

Traffic on the national #2 is somewhat disturbed at the height of Chalon, the first communal section of Miragôane.

Saturday, the falling of a tree has temporarily blocked the National road #1 at the height of Pont Mapou Chevalier, Gonaives. The communal DPC and town hall restored circulation.

In the south, rains continue to fall in the Nippes, also affect particularly Port-Margot and Fonds des nègres. A flood beginning has been noted on the river Pins in Asile. Brigadiers of the Civil Protection intervened on the main crossing points to prevent local residents continue to cross the river.

In the Grand’Anse, the rivers Voldrogue, ‎Roseaux and Abricots are in flood. Moderate rains affect Jérémie, Moron, Chambellan, Abricot and Beaumont.

In the South, 25 houses are flooded in Camp-Perrin, specifically in Laporte and street Tinat (Bas Camp Perrin, downtown). A house was damaged in Bananier (uppper Camp Perrin). The ravine of South and the river Brad goch are in flood. Gullies Opac, the Redoute are also out of their beds, gardens and cattle heads were washed away.

Cavaillon river is in flood, the raging waters devastated plantations. Same situation in Maniche and Chantal where rivers of Acul du Sud and Desmornes are in flood.

The Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Communities informs that in relation to the situation, the National Emergency Operation Centre is partially activated. The monitoring unit at departments ensure the monitoring of the territory in order to inform and assist the population and also ensure prompt answers operations. The inhabitants of risk areas are advised to remain vigilant and strictly implement the safety instructions.

The Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Communities reminds citizens that face of persistent bad weather which resulted in saturated soils, the risk of flooding, landslides and mudslides, are accentuated and it is dangerous and strongly not advised to travel on foot, bike, ride animals and even car at the time of flood waters on the roads, to avoid the risks of regrettable accidents. It is also forbidden to cross rivers during floods.
