Haiti: Dinner to Honor Irina Bokova, UNESCO

PORT -AU- PRINCE, Haiti (sentinel.ht) – The Haitian Government held a dinner at the Royal Oasis in honor of the Director General of the United Nations Educations, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Irina Bokova. The reception, hosted by Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, was attended by several members of the Administration, the Apostolic Nuncio and several ambassadors accredited in Haiti.

The Head of Government was pleased to welcome the Director General of UNESCO, who was in Haiti for her second visit. Lamothe praised her interest in Haiti, including the mark of attention, in the context of reconstruction that the country has been struggling from since the earthquake of January 12, 2010, requiring the assistance of all partners and friends in Haiti.

The Prime Minister stressed the support of UNESCO which consists of : the drafting and implementation of the Operational Plan 2010-2015 the education sector , the creation of the first biosphere reserve in Haiti , and the strategy to reduce disaster risk , the management of the Biosphere Reserve La Selle , the protection and enhancement of wealth and knowledge cultural expertise. All this with a view to accelerate the development of cultural tourism destinations likely to promote the emergence of a sustainable, job-creating the significant local impact.

The Head of Government, welcomed the unconditional support of UNESCO Haitian Government has worked tirelessly to ensure a quality education for all Haitian children through the Universal Schooling Program , Free and Compulsory ( PSUGO ) whereby more than one million children have now taken the path of the school. The Martelly administration and Lamothe Government has already established a social assistance program for mothers of these children enrolled in PSUGO.

The Director -General of UNESCO , Irina Bokova, has , meanwhile , welcomed the Government’s commitment to rebuild the country, have made the wise choice to ensure education for all . It also promises to support the Government’s efforts in its relentless struggle against poverty and social exclusion.
