Haiti President Michel Martelly is extending his “warmest congratulations” to Danilo Medina, the President-Elect of the Dominican Republic.

Medina won the country’s election on Sunday.

Martelly, in a statement, said he reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining and strengthening the “cordial relations that have always characterized the history of both countries.”

The President said he hoped bilateral cooperation between the Dominican Republic and Haiti would continue under the new administration.

Medina’s predecessor, current President Leonel Fernandez, hosted Martelly for an official visit to Santo Domingo in March.

That visit culminated in a group of cooperation agreements.

Fernandez’ wife, Margarita Cedeño de Fernandez, was elected Vice President on Sunday.
