The Christmas season has always been a time when various Haitian businesspeople made a little money. Now so in 2011!!. Sophie Martelly and her band of friends, cancelled existing contracts and took over everything, everything, everything.
Martelly prepared almost 500 Christmas baskets, for the palace at an actual cost of $85.00 per unit and then charged the palace accounts $850.00 a basket. This gave her a net profit of over $400,000.00
And then she bought palm trees for $40.00 Haitian – about $5.00 American and sold them to the palace for $1,000.00 per copy. Observers say there is no limit to this lady’s greed.
As an interesting sidelight, observers say that Martelly’s family has made nothing from this game, while his wife’s team has made up for the oversight.
