Gabriel Bien-Aimé, former Haitian minister of education and presumed presidential candidate has died, Haitian government officials confirmed.Bien-Aimé died of a heart attack Saturday. He was said to be preparing to run in Haiti’s yet-to-be announced presidential elections later this year. He was a member of OPL, considered Haiti’s most organized political party.
Bien-Aimé’s death came on the same day that the Haitian government and the Inter-American Development Bank announced a multi-billion dollar plan to revamp Haiti’s educational system with help from donors.
In Haiti, poor parents spend the majority of their income to send children to school.
“This is a great opportunity to do something to provide…universal standards and provide quality education,” IDB head Luis Alberto Moreno told The Miami Herald as he prepared to board a plane from Port-au-Prince.
