Former Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe declared Thursday that President Trump’s remarks calling Haiti, El Salvador and several African nations “shithole countries” marked a “new low” for the U.S. leader.

“SHAME ON TRUMP! The world is witnessing a new low today with this #ShitholeNations remark! totally unacceptable! uncalled for moreover it shows a lack a respect and IGNORANCE never seen before in the recent history of the US by any President! Enough is enough!!” Lamothe tweeted.

Lamothe’s comment came after reports surfaced that Trump had demanded in a meeting with lawmakers to know why the U.S. lets immigrants from “shithole” countries enter, and suggested that the U.S. should allow in more people from countries like Norway.

The comments drew immediate backlash from foreign governments, including those of Haiti and Norway, and from lawmakers, many of whom accused Trump of racist behavior.

Trump denied in a tweet on Friday that he used such language in the meeting, acknowledging that he talked “tough” about immigration.
