Port-au-Prince’s Plaza Hotel hosted an important press conference this afternoon at which Gervais Charles and his American associates, Ed Marger and Mike Puglise, attacked Uruguayan claims to the effect that Johny Jean, the rape victim, could not be found for interviews.

In fact, all three lawyers attacked Uruguayan duplicity in this horrific case that saw an 18 year old Haitian boy savagely raped by 5 Uraguayan sailors. When the crime was originally reported, the MINUSTAH authority carried out what they would describe as “a complete and extensive investigation., of the case…”  They found absolutely no evidence to support the young boys claim.

That would have bee the end of the story. However, a young Haitian was swapping music with a Uruguayan sailor. He got music, and a big surprise. His downloads included a video of Johny being raped. It was taken by one of the sailors; the first to rape Johny. This bombshell saw Ed Marger, Congressman Bob Barr and Mike Puglise fly down from Georgia to represent Johny Jean. The Uruguayan president  Mujica had seen the dangers and send his army chief of staff, General Burone to meet with the Americans.

The general apologized and promised that the criminals would face the maximum Uruguayan justice. He was accompanied by the judge advocate, from the Uruguayan  Navy.

President Mujica wrote a letter of apology, accepting responsibility and promising to make amends.

All of the promises were meaningless. They were made so that the five sailors could be repatriated to Uruguay where they were released from custody with the excuse that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, after expenditures of time and money, could not locate Johny Jean for an interview. This is a simple lie. Johny Jean is available, and has always been available.

Uruguay is a small Banana Republic that depends upon support of the United Nations – in paying for thousands of Uruguayan peace keepers in UN service. This is a major factor in their annual budget.

Uruguayan troops have ruined the lives of a young Haitian boy, and his family. The government has accepted responsibility – but this was a hollow lie. After giving their word, and the word of their Nation, the president of Uruguay and other, have shown what their nation’s honor is worth.
