Statement by U.S. Ambassador Denis Hankins on Haiti Security Update

U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Dennis Hankins recently highlighted significant security progress in the country, attributed to the Multinational Mission for Security Support (MMAS) that was established to combat gang violence. The mission, led by Kenya, aims to support the Haitian police in their efforts to restore order and provide humanitarian access to populations affected by the violence.

Hankins announced that 600 new personnel would join the mission by the end of December 2024, bringing the total strength to approximately 1,000. The additional contingent is expected to strengthen the mission’s operational capabilities on the ground.

Currently, about 400 Kenyan police officers are already deployed in Haiti, and other countries such as Guatemala and Belize are also contributing to this effort.

The initial results of the mission show notable progress, including the resumption of control over some essential infrastructure from gangs, as well as the opening of crucial roads that have enabled the return of thousands of displaced people. However, despite this progress, the security situation remains complex and requires continued attention to maintain the gains made and address the persistent challenges related to armed violence in the country.
