I was in Haiti for the 2006 elections as an observer. All of the problems were the result of Preval people. They created incidents, and then blamed their opponents. The ballots in the garbage dump were placed there by Preval supporters.
Preval received substantial support from the drug community who didn’t want any sort of reformer in power. Now we have drug smugglers in the Chamber of Deputies, Palace, Cabinet…. Haiti is really a Narco State and there is little that can be done.
I witnessed busloads of Preval supporters driving from election office to election office as the passengers voted time after time. The counting of the ballats was a complete and total farce. Most people are subtle when they stuff ballot boxes with false ballots, seeking privacy. Preval’s people sat on the floors of the counting stations, dumping the real votes and replacing them with Preval’s.
And then the Preval camp threatened violence if Preval was forced into a run-off. To demonstrate their ability they raided the Montana Hotel, headquarters of MINUSTAH, and ran uncontrolled through the place as UN soldiers stood by. Pressure from Brazil and Peru gave Preval 51 percent, avoiding a run-off.
The Haitian majority has absolutely no faith in the electoral process, viewing it as way in which politicans – especially Preval, Leslie Voltair, Frantz Verella, Fred Joseph, Jacques Alexis and Bette Delatour steal everything that is not tied down and many things that are.
Aristide was better than this incompenet gang of criminals!
