A Haitian businessman wanted on drug trafficking charges in the United States was arrested Thursday at a luxurious hotel in the Dominican Republic.
Rodolphe Jaar was arrested by agents from the Dominican Republic’s anti-drugs enforcement agency at a Santo Domingo hotel after being served with a U.S. arrest warrant. He will be extradited to the United States.
Jaar, who lives in Port-au-Prince, was found with a Haitian passport, and a temporary Dominican residence card. He is listed as an officer of several Florida-based businesses including United Foam and Plastic, LLC.
He was also involved in business ventures in his native Haiti, serving as general director of an agriculture association that last year entered into a partnership with Haiti’s agriculture ministry and the U.S. Agency for International Development. The goal of the venture, the WINNER project, is to help rehabilitate a river in Haiti’s Cul-de-Sac Plain.
Jaar’s group, according to a press note on WINNER’s website, was tasked with providing the materials and workers for the dredging efforts.
U.S. officials in Miami unsealed the grand jury indictment against Jaar, also known as “Whiskey,” on Thursday. He and several others listed on the indictment are accused of conspiracy to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine in the United States. If convicted, he would face up to life in prison.
