PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) – The head of MINUSTAH, Mariano Fernández, was convened on Tuesday by the Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marie-Michele Rey, to provide explanations for the rape suffered by a teenager in the town of Port-Salut.
Mr. Fernandez arrived at midday at the MFA in the district of Bois-Verna, Port-au-Prince. Following the meeting, a reliable source told the agency that Haitian diplomacy is determined to make all arrangements for light to be shed and justice be done on this case.
The head of MINUSTAH had called Monday Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive to apologize for the despicable act.
In a note published on Sunday, September 4, the presidency said he had taken note of the gang rape of a young Haitian in the town of Port-Salut where soldiers of the Uruguayan United Nations Mission in Haiti are specifically accused by the victim.
“The Presidency strongly condemns this act which national consciousness and rebellion awaits a detailed re-establishing the accuracy of the facts and circumstances,” stated the note. “Any act of rape, without regard to gender of the victim or the executioner, is a serious offense which can not be tolerated. It is therefore requested to the authorities concerned to meet urgently with officials of MINUSTAH that immediate steps be taken to prevent the recurrence of such acts.”
“Waiting for that light be shed on this crime, and justice, the President shares the excitement of all the Haitian people and provide an assurance that the perpetrators and accomplices of such an act will not go unpunished.”
