US Citizen Held in Haiti- Added COMMENTARY By Haitian-Truth

United support for Navin, today 3/13/12 we need atleast 25 people to help by contacting our Senator and Congressman………please send your support to the Narine Family. We ONLY need 5 minutes of your time……………………….. no money……………….just a letter or call (all is explained below). Thank You

Dear Friends and Family:

We need your help. Navindra “Navin” Narine is being held in Haiti as a political prisoner. We need your help to help save his life and bring him home to his family.

We are asking for Senator Rubio and Congressman Deutch, Florida politicians, to help advocate for Navin’s release and a fair, impartial trial. Navin is not being treated fairly under Haitian law and the U.S. Department of State has witnessed this but says they can do nothing but monitor the case.

Please find attached templates of letters addressed to Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Congressman Ted Deutch. There is also a phone script template attached with the Senator’s and Congressman’s main phone number in south Florida. On Tuesday, March 13, 2012, we ask that you use the phone scripts and call the Senator’s (305-418-8553) and the Congressman’s (561-988-6302) office. Their office hours are from 9 to 5. We need a coordinated effort of at least 25 people to have their offices call to action. It is very important that you that you call on Tuesday as Navin’s case comes up for “trial” again on Wednesday in Haiti. This will make the 15 time that his case has come up and a plethora of corrupt and evil deeds has impeded fair and humane treatment.

Please use the template at bottom of this page or prepare your own communication and write to these Florida politicians. You may copy and paste the letter edited with your name and address at each of their websites located below.

https://deutchforms.house.gov/Forms/WriteYourRep/default.aspx

http://www.rubio.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contact

We know that it is much to ask you to write and call these politicians’ offices but we would not do so if it was not of the utmost imperative and if a person’s life was not at stake. We thank you in advance for any support you might be able to give and pray that through this act of kindness that you and your family are further blessed.

Thank you,

Kym Becker (Narine family friend)

I have to share Navin’s sister’s letter to the congressman and plead for your kindness.

Re: Help Free Navindra Narine from Haitian Prison

Dear Congressman Deutch:

Please help support the release of Navindra Narine, an American Citizen who has been held as a political captive in Haiti since August 2011 when visiting Haiti on a business trip.

On August 8, 2011, Navindra went to Haiti as a consultant for a Florida based corporation to explore the opportunity to open a new call center, which would provide employment and foreign revenue as in indicated in President Martelly’s agenda for “opening Haiti for business”. Shortly after his arrival he was arrested on charges of bypassing. When the judicial system could not formally make a charge on bypassing, as it is not a law in Haiti, he was held in prison for 2 months until manufactured charges of fraud and criminal conspiracy were implemented. To date, he has been to “trial” on 14 separate accounts. On 2 of the accounts, the US Embassy, Department of State, were present and documented the unfair judicial process that Navindra has received. They noted the blatant corruption but continue to communicate they can do no more than monitor the case.

I am sending this letter to ask you to help advocate for Navindra’s release. I respectfully request your assistance to help this innocent American citizen from this oppressive situation and regain his human rights and return him to his family in Florida.

Sincerely,

S. Fla. man remains jailed in Haiti

Daughter wants dad home for Christmas

Author: Roger Lohse, Local 10 Reporter, rlohse@Local10.comPublished On: Dec 19 2011 06:29:22 PM EST  Updated On: Dec 20 2011 11:32:20 AM EST  CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. –

A South Florida businessman remains jailed in Haiti, and his family is holding on to hope that he will be released before Christmas.

It’s not a Christmas wish list that has 6-year-old Priyanka Narine busy these days. You can tell by her drawings of a little girl crying that there’s only one thing she wants this year.

“You can see the first thing on my Christmas list is daddy,” she said.

It’s been five months since her father, Navin Narine, left for an overnight business trip to Haiti working as a consultant for a local telecom company. Instead, he ended up in prison, charged with fraud, money laundering and criminal conspiracy. The Haitian government accused Narine of setting up a pirate phone company, so callers could avoid the hefty long-distance government tax. It’s called bypassing, and although it is a civil offense, it is not a crime.

“It never crossed my mind in a million years that something like this would happen to him or to our family,” said Narine’s wife, Sarah.

She claimed the charges have been leveled by high-ranking government leaders who profit from the tax on long-distance phone calls. The U.S. State Department is involved, as are top officials at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince.

“Our lawyer keeps saying there is a lot of political interferences in the case and the judge can’t do his job because his job is being threatened,” Sarah Narine said.

On Monday, Local 10’s Roger Lohse sent emails to Congressman Ted Deutch, the U.S. State Department and to officials at the U.S. Embassy in Haiti, requesting an update on their efforts to help Narine, a U.S. citizen who all have acknowledged is being held illegally in another country.

Later in the day, Sarah Narine got a call from the U.S. Embassy in Haiti.

“So when do you think something will happen?” she said to the woman on the phone.

Sarah Narine was told that U.S. officials are waiting for the judge to make his decision on whether to dismiss the case or proceed to trial. She also acknowledged that Narine is caught in the middle of something bigger than bypassing.

“I will say that this is a political case and so it’s difficult. It’s something that has to be handled gently,” she said.

Unfortunately, there’s no gentle way to explain that to tearful 6-year-old girl.

“I miss him a lot and I want him to come home for Christmas and that’s all I want for my Christmas present,” Priyanka said.

A spokesman for Deutch told Local 10 that the judge, Bernard Sanvil, has reviewed the case file and they are expecting a decision from him. The woman from the Embassy told Sarah Narine the judge would announce his decision sometime Tuesday.

Lawyer: Piracy Suspect is No Longer Vice President of CallDirek

Public Justice present at raid

MIAMI, USA (defend.ht) – As an ongoing investigation into a multimillion dollar per year telecommunications bypassing operation continues, a high profile suspect, Charles Gentil is being distanced by his former company CallDirek for his alleged involvement in the unlawful acts.

The most recently filed annual report with the State of Florida, dated June 30, for CallDirek’s parent company Unitel Inc, omitted declaring the position of Vice President to the state. Prior reports, those available as the news of the crimes were being made public, named the company’s Vice President to be Charles Gentil.

Lawyers for Call Direk contacted DH to clarify that Mr. Gentil is no longer, and has not been, the Vice President of the company for a time that at least precedes the June 30 filing date. Circumstances surrounding the removal of the former VP were not elaborated on.

Counsel for the company, Attorney Ralph Kénol, also refutes any implication that CallDirek, “a company with a longstanding reputation for quality service to the Haitian community and beyond” would be involved in the crimes, adding that “CallDirek has never been involved in fraudulent bypass activties and only terminates its Haiti traffic directly to Digicel and Voila.”

On Tuesday the whereabouts of the former CallDirek VP was unknown to justice officials and Government Commissioner Jean-Francois Sonel expressed worries that time may have allotted his suspect time to flight the country.

The commissioner held sternly that there were more arrests to come. On last Wednesday law enforcement officers raided the Haiti home of Mr. Gentil. Commissioner Sonel insists it is still early in the investigation.

On August 4 officials from the National Council of Communications (CONATEL) and the Haitian National Police Anti Telecommunication Fraud (PNH ATF) division received a series of suspicious numbers from communications carrier, Digicel, that led to two raids on properties in Port-au-Prince. A hoard of telecom bypassing equipment was seized by authorities as five arrests were made and several warrants were issued. Government officials estimate the bypassing cost to carriers on the order of $750,000 [US].

Haiti: Michel Martelly and the tax scheme

Posted by Morning Eyes on May 21, 2011

By Jacob Davis

Morning Eyes Staff Writer

Returning from an official trip when he was not even elected official (the news was confirmed during his stay in Washington Wednesday, April 20, 2011), President-elect Michael J.Martelly, who during his campaign made many promises that many doubted he could keep. For instance, he promised free early education for about 500,000 children of school age. What is looking more and more empty promises were made at a press conference on April 26 while in a soi-disant official trip in Washington. When pressed by the journalists on where he was going to find the money, he became evasive and aloof. “I’m a man who always keeps his words,” he could only say.

During the trip in Washington, Martelly claimed to have met with officials from the World Bank (WB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Although Mr. Martelly bragged about assurances that he received from those officials, we all know that nothing concrete has ever come out of these meetings. No country on earth can build infrastructure and enable reconstruction of its economy without the possibility of loans,” said then President-elect Michael J. Martelly.

But remember the $ 200 million gift they say that was guaranteed by the IDB and the WB after the earthquake of January 12, 2010? Now we know that it was all a chimera. Critics said it was that money Martelly had in mind when he made his pompous promises.

Then the president-elect said he intends to use his “powers” to satisfy the people. In order to defend the nation, the interests of the nation and people, I will use my power as supreme leader of the nation for the welfare of the people, “said Mr. Martelly. Before anyone had the chance to think of what he had in mind, the musician-turned politician went on to clarify. My government will charge a fee of 5 cents(without specifying whether it is 5 cents for water bottles or 5 U.S. cents (Ed), on all international calls to Haiti.

Martelly also said that all phone companies have already agreed to it, and this will be effective on June 1st.These declarations may be full of thin air, for according to Haiti Progrès,a weekly newspaper based in New York, some officials from Comcel, Digicel and Haitel, who asked not to be named, were not able to confirm Martelly’s assertion, especially with regard to the amount that should be paid to the State. Will the money go to the State or to some obscure coffer?

A sleazy operation

The operation to get Sweet Micky to the crippled National Palace was a well funded one—one many said Martelly could ill afford. The most compelling evidence to this assertion is the hiring of the firm Ostos & Sola and the Global Voice Group of Lawrence Lamothe to whom 6 million dollars were paid, according to some sources.

Some two-and-half months ago, the New York Times reported that Martelly’s campaign was a multimillion dollar one. Indeed, it was Lawrence Lamothe, CEO of Global Voice SA company established in Haiti that played a key role in hiring Ostos & Sola on behalf of Martelly, according to some sources. It was also reported that Lamothe and his company also have ties with many U.S. communications companies, such as “One World Telecom Inc..”, The “Miami Beach Holding Company” etc..

One can be certain that there were a lot of investors behind the operation, and it is the harvest time, no matter how immoral it could be, it will not stop them from pressing ahead with their Machiavellian agenda. In reactionary politics, morality has no place. The stake is high, so is the rush to cash in. Greed and their un-patriotism will not allow them to even wait for the proposed recovery money that was promised by Martelly “newfound partners” in Washington.

So, they are ready to set in motion a presidential scheme to recover their investment. They are now eyeing on money transferred to Haiti, the most important form of infusing hard currency in the country. The Martelly government plans to extract 1 dollar from every transfer going into Haiti and plans to raise 8 million dollars monthly. Although we know that Haitians in the Diaspora send money to their relatives regularly, this amount seems quite exaggerated. On what basis did they arrive at this conclusion, no one knows. This is all a blur of tangled!

That’s not all. Martelly plans on raising taxes on deprived taxi drivers while shunning all calls to raise taxes on imported luxury vehicles and on increasing property taxes for private residences in the suburbs. It is quite understandable, for we all know where those luxury items will go to. They will go to those whom Martelly would not dare to alienate.

Assuming that raising taxes on transfers and on taxi drivers were an act of genuine legitimacy, entrenched corruption within the state bureaucracy would never allow something like this to take root.

So, the next few weeks will be crucial in understanding the true component of the new Haitian government. But, one can bet that there will be no surprise because the head of Martelly transitional government is Daniel Supplice, a former Duvalier Social Affairs Minister.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Haitian justice officials have executed the largest bust in the history of the Haitian National Police (PNH) giving rise to a series of warrants including an indictment of Call Direk Vice-President Charles Gentil.

On Thursday, the Caribbean telecommunications giant, Digicel, provided to the National Council of Communications (CONATEL) and the PNH’s Anti-Telecommunication Fraud (ATF) unit, localized information on fraudulent numbers suspected of circumventing normal telephonic exchange carriers and avoiding communications charges; a form of piracy known as bypassing.

The PNH ATF launched an investigation discovering two suspicious properties at Fragneau Ville and Delmas 30.

On Monday, officials from CONATEL were on hand to identify the equipment along with four judges and police officers which initiated the raid. The properties where found to have equipment typical of a bypassing operation and equipment was seized. Five arrests were made and several warrants for arrest have followed.

In total, officers of the police nationale siezed 9 simulation boxes < = =text/> /* */ , 11 outdoor attennas and a host of routers, power cells and regulators.

CONATEL estimates the loss to carriers, including the state, to be at $750,000 [US] per month. Investigations have led to the Vice-President of CallDirek < = =text/> /* */ , Charles Gentil. He is among those warranting arrest and is facing a federal indictment.

COMMENT: HAITIAN-TRUTH.ORG

I can remember seeing this guy arrested on TV. They shut off an entire city block and raided the facility. It was ACCESS HAITI that was involved, along with a calling card company in Miami. It could have been NOPIN, but mentioning that will see some attorneys in Fort Lauderdale threatening us with death or worse. NOPIN is owned by Laurent Lamothe’s team.

DIGICEL has used a lot of leverage to close down several facilities that “bypassed” the overall system.

As a foreigner, he probably didn’t understand the rules here. I assumed he was one of the ACCESS HAITI team since he looked to be a light-skinned Arab.

This is the fist I have heard since he was arrested.

They should arrest those who hired him.
