The elections, had they been run honestly, would have seen a result that would have diluted a societal problem that has afflicted the nation for 200 years.  There is a definite color line that may not be apparent, to outsiders, but it is there.

Had the election been run honestly the two top contenders would have gone to the run-off. Charles Baker would have run against Jean-Henry Ceant.

Since the Preval move to steal the vote, Ceant and Baker have become friends in a nation where this is not really as easy as it sounds.

Jean Henry Ceant comes from the lowest end of Haitian society. His mother was a marchant and sold on the streets to put her children through school. She managed to see Ceant and his brothers finish university. Ceant became a lawyer while his brothers are now doctors. Ceant is a black Haitian and serves as an example, to all, what can be done if the effort is made.

On the other hand, Baker comes from a family of privilege. He is a well-known member of the business community and represents the mulattos sector.

The only solution, to avoid another ongoing political disaster, is to have Preval step down. A new CEP must be created, a CEP without allegiance to any individual….but with a loyalty to Haiti.   The international community must invest the time, effort and cash required to guarantee a secure and fair vote.

If this is done – forget about Manigat and Martelly. The two leading candidates will be Baker and Ceant….going into a runoff.

If Ceant wins, Baker could be Prime Minister.

If Baker wins, Ceant could be Prime Minister.

This simple solution will blur, forever, the  existing divide between the two main sectors of Haitian society.

Between them, Baker and Ceant, Ceant and Baker could lead us into a new era of prosperity and success.
