Haitian detectives are investigating the killing of a Canadian priest who was shot to death Thursday as he left a bank in the Caribbean nation’s capital Port-au-Prince, authorities said.

Police inspector Aladin Jean-Louis said that 62-year-old Richard E. Joyal had just withdrawn $1,000 from a bank about 10:30 a.m. when two men on a motorcycle approached and grabbed a bag he was carrying. The passenger shot him three times in the back.

Authorities later found the $1,000 in Joyal’s wallet and confiscated the money. The contents of Joyal’s billfold included a driver’s license showing he was from Quebec, but CBC News has confirmed Joyal was originally from Manitoba.

Another identification card showed he was a priest who worked as an administrator for a Canadian congregation in the Delmas district of Port-au-Prince.

Police investigating the shooting in Delmas redirected traffic on one of the busiest thoroughfares in the capital.

The United States in December sharpened its travel warning to Haiti, citing kidnappings and other crime, cholera and a tattered infrastructure. Canada followed with a similar advisory.

Yet again, we must suspect that someone in the bank phoned accomplices, telling them the priest had just withdrawn a lot of money.  This is commonplace in Haiti and the banking system seems to ignore this problem.

  1. your completely right ,this is commonplace in Haiti, why don’t Haitian detective’s just go to bank and arrest the bank teller,if they take their time and hold teller for questioning for a few days, doing that they will get all acomplices. But this will never happen because the police and all the big wigs are involve in the crime. Its plain and simple the banks are involve.I know of several friends of mines that lost their family members going to the bank.Know one wants to see or say the truth, because the big wigs and the police are involve.Know one does nothing, Know one says nothing, case close, know suspects ,the big wigs are investigating the case, the big wigs are driving around por-tau -prince in their $80,000 dollars porshe cayenne-know one says nothing, the big wig are building several houses all over Haiti with the donated money, know one says nothing, everything that’s being done ilegaly in plain view the big wig controls it.The case is solved,:the big wig done it.

  2. look at this guy, comes to hait to help then get shot dead in the street, this is a reoccurring thing in Haiti. They want people to come here to invest and for vacationing.my advise to anyone stay far away from here.Haiti is the devils den-last place on earth like this

  3. explain this to me, how does a bank teller finds the money to drive a $50,000 US dollars car in Haiti, but in the US and Canada even France a person in the same position cant have a car like that-this goes all across the board in every job position in Haiti.A simple worker in the past port office builds several houses all over Haiti and have enough money to go to France and the US the several times a year. This is happening in plain view and nobody does or says nothing. If you are in a government position in Haiti you make more money in someone in the same position in anywere in the world. Why is that?

  4. do a google search and check Preval and Aristide net worth–they both have a net worth of over five hundred million dollars–how is it possible that if you combine several of the past US presidents bank account together these ex-president of Haiti have ten time more money-clinton wrote many books and so did Bush sr,Bush Jr.-and still these ex -presidents of haiti have much more wealth.-dont say because Aristide is smarter or even Preval-Someone please reply to this question-they both are big wigs in Haiti
