IT ISN’T OVER UNTIL THE FAT LADY SINGS JEAN-HENRY CEANT IS STILL IN THE GAME

July 1, 2011

In America, much of the entertainment – before the introduction of films – came in the form a vaudeville shows will all sorts of performers, magicians, song and dance people, instrumentalists… the show usually ended with a fat lady who sung the closing song. This was the origin of the saying “It isn’t over until the fat lady sings…” and is applied to all sorts of situations

The confusing process of picking a Prime Minister for Haiti falls into this category

As the week draws to an end the convoluted game of picking a Prime Minister continues. And, although he was written off, a few days ago, Jean-Henry Ceant is still a potential choice to fill the position as President Martelly moves from disaster to disaster.

Martelly has not won many admirers, or respect by his unprofessional, incompetent manner with which he is dealing with Haiti’s present and future.

We must have a Prime Minister that can command the respect of Haitians and the International Community.

Bernard Gousse and Max Bellerive are not two such people. Bellerive’s loyalty is suspect and his ties are stronger to the Dominican Republic, and Bill Clinton that to the Haitian people. Gousse’s record is such that he will not, cannot be accepted by most Haitians or the International Community.

Let us settle the question and move forward in an attempt to salvage some credibility, credibility suffering daily outrages by Martelly.

Like it or not, the last man standing is Jean-Henry Ceant.

Perhaps Mirlande Manigat can play the part of a fat lady and sing the National Anthem, bringing to a close this first, confused chapter of the Martelly presidency.
