US government revokes more visas for Haitians

(AP)  PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A U.S. official in Haiti says Washington has revoked visas for a number of Haitian citizens.

The U.S. Embassy spokesman declines to release the identities of Haitians who have lost their visas. Spokesman Jon Piechowski also won’t say if some or all are public officials, citing privacy rules for individual visa decisions.

Washington revoked the visas of about two dozen Haitian officials in January to step up pressure that led Haiti’s previous government to drop its favored candidate from a presidential runoff election.

Haitian electoral officials recently drew criticism for refusing to reverse the results in a handful of legislative races that have been challenged by the U.S. and others because of allegations of election fraud.
