UN undertakes ‘strategic assessment’ of Haiti

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti (CMC) — The Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous, is leading a strategic assessment mission to Haiti in keeping with a United Nations Security Council Resolution.

Ladsous, will during this stay here this week, represent the UN Secretary General at the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise.

The purpose of the strategic assessment mission is to develop a UN-wide understanding of the situation of the country through an overall assessment of the political, security, human rights, socio-economic and humanitarian situation.

In October last year, the Security Council called for a transition towards a future United Nations presence after the expiry of the mandate of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) on April 15 this year.

The Un Security Council had also asked the Secretary-General to present a strategic assessment, preferably after the inauguration of a new elected President in Haiti

The assessment will identify the critical needs of Haiti and will recommend options for the future configuration and presence of the UN in Haiti to be presented in the next Report of the Secretary General due in mid-March. These options will inform the Security Council on the way forward, before the mandate expires on 15 April.

During the visit, the Strategic Assessment Mission will meet various stakeholders, including government officials, diplomatic corps and well as the UN Country Team.
