Haiti - Reconstruction : Rehabilitation of Runway 10-28 of the Toussaint Louverture Airport

The company Vorbe et Fils Construction (V&F), alongside Razel, a French company specialized in civil engineering (Fayat Group), will make significant rehabilitation work in depth of the runway 10-28 from the International Airport Toussaint Louverture.

Industrial Vorbe Jean Marie, CEO of Groupe Jean Vorbe explained that “The runway of this airport has been renovated in the past. Haiti would not have been authorized by the Organization of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), to receive international flights, if the runway was not properly put into a condition deemed acceptable. When the airport was commissioned in 1965 under the government of François Duvalier, the runway was made of concrete. In 1988, the French company, Fougerolle was responsible for its rehabilitation and asphalting. Almost thirty years later, significant work must be done again.”

Concerning the nature of the work, Jean Marie Vorbe explained that they will be different from those undertook in Cap Haitien, where it was question of the establishment of asphalt layers on the existing off track and on its extension. “In the case of the Toussaint Louverture International Airport, it is a rehabilitation aimed both foundations that the roadway. Razel and V&F will tackle, among other things, to the problem of the basement, which has been declared unfit to carry the loads of large current aircraft. The basement of the platform will therefore be treated in order to allow greater resistance to this structure.”

Rehabilitation works mainly concern :
– The runway and take-off (runway 10-28), with a length of 3.06 km and a width of 42.75 m. During this work, that track will be widened to 60 meters with teh construction of two shoulders of 8.625 m on each side.

– The lane that channels traffic to the main terminal, with a width of 23m will be widened to 44 m, through the building of two shoulders 10.5 m build on either side of the track.

Nature of the works :
The bulk of the work will begin with the excavation at the shoulders and drainage. A total of 738,000 m3 of material are to be excavated or stripped. The platform will receive 60,000 m3 of fill. The shoulders will be built on the embankment with 30 cm granulate Untreated (GNT) in layers of foundation, followed by 5 cm BBSG leveling layer and 5 cm bituminous concrete Module High (BBME) in working layer. It is at the shoulders that will position the conduits to the runway lighting.

162,000 m2 track are to be milled and after crack bridging, the slope will be corrected by a leveling layer of bituminous concrete Semi-Grenu (BBSG). The running surface that will receive the marking paint will consist of 5 cm BBME.

Given the intensity of air traffic between 6:00 am and 8:30 pm, this work can only take place overnight over a period of one year.

Current status of construction site :
The preparatory phase has already begun, the location of the base is made. By the week of July 7, will begin the readings Lidar (Light Detection And Ranging) of the runway and traffic lane that will last two weeks, and a core drilling campaign and of runway deflection measurement. These data will help prepare the execution file to send to the approval of the monitoring mission.

The Group also works on housing, office and the laboratory of the monitoring mission.
