New UK embassy to boost trade in earthquake-hit Haiti

by buildingaschool

The UK’s new embassy in Port-au-Prince opens next week – the first
time in nearly 50 years that the country has had a diplomatic presence.
The embassy will be in the grounds of the Canadian embassy on Delmas 75
and will be run by Chargé d’affaires Rick Stearn, moving to Haiti from
his previous posting in Sierre Leone. Britain’s ambassador to Haiti
(and the DR), Steven Fisher will be based in Santo Domingo, and all
visa services will remain at that embassy.

Britain is to open an embassy in Haiti to boost the Caribbean
country’s recovery from the ravages of the 2010 earthquake and create
new trade opportunities for UK firms.

Foreign Office minister Hugo Swire, who will travel to Port au Prince
next week to unveil the embassy, said the move was part of a wider
strategy to boost Britain’s presence throughout Latin America in
response to its  growing economic and political importance.
