A senior United Nations official in Haiti on Tuesday said he is confident that there will be good elections in Haiti on Sunday, when the country votes for a new president and legislature.

Edmond Mulet, the United Nations special envoy for Haiti, told reporters that despite what he called the “volatile political climate” in Haiti, the electoral process continues unabated, with preparations moving ahead for Sunday’s voting. Voters will choose a new president as well as the 99 members of the Chamber of Deputies and 11 members of the 30-seat Senate.

Mulet told reporters in a videoconference from Haiti that more than 4.7 million Haitians are registered to vote.  But he said about 200,000 of those names will be removed from the roster because the voters have died.

He said there has always been some violence during Haitian elections, but that security measures are in place to deal with it. “Overall, if you compare the situation in Haiti – security, the capacity to organize elections, the levels of violence, etc. – it is still a matter of concern, but if you compare that with previous parliamentary elections or municipal elections and certainly presidential elections from the past, we are in a much, much better position than on previous occasions,” he said.

Mulet added that he is confident that in these circumstances and within the Haitian context, there will be “good elections.”  He said preliminary results of the vote will be available on December 7 and that final official results would be announced on December 20. Any runoff elections would be held on January 16.

On the issue of the cholera epidemic in Haiti, the U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator in the country, Nigel Fisher, said that according to official figures, there have been 50,000 cases of the disease and 1,200 deaths.  But he said it is likely that the actual figure is higher, with up to 70,000 cases and 2,000 deaths.

“The medical specialists all say that this cholera epidemic will continue for months and maybe a year, at least – that we will see literally hundreds of thousands of cases, that it is almost impossible to stop the spread of these cases because it is so contagious and those who carry the cholera bacterium often take days to show it and in that way, they may move anywhere,” he said.

Fisher said there is a need to significantly increase the number of cholera treatment centers in Haiti and to deal with a shortage of medical personnel, particularly nurses.

Mulet says that “in the Haitian context, there will be good elections…”

Why doesn’t MINUSTAH do what they did in 2005, and save everyone a lot of time and expense.

In 2005 Preval got something like 23% of the vote…and a low percentage voted.

A run-off was constitutionally mandated…..but MINUSTAH, led by Brazil and Chile, in consultation with Preval and Rene Momplaisir, leader of the popular organizations, made a deal. The other candidates were not asked their opinions.

And so, Haiti had an illegal Preval government inflicted upn its population. The people did not want Preval They hate Preval. Momplaisir supported Preval because Preval   promised to bring Aristide back – then broke his word.

Mulet, and MINUSTAh have supported the criminal government, and continue to support Preval/Celestin, because the know he will allow MINUSTAH’s continued existence and corruption. It is a big money spinner for the UN.

Michele Montas, the ex-Spokesperson for Secretary General Ban ki Moon convinced this dimwit that Preval “was the only hope for Haiti” before the Americans forced her out. She then cam back to Haiti and, with the paragon of integrity, Senator Lambert/cocaine smuggler, set up UNITE/INITE before she took up another international org position.

Last Sunday, MINUSTAH staffers stood on Petionville streets, in front of UN marked vehicles, urging people to vote Celestin.

Hardly an unbiased organization.

MINUSTAH supports a coup via the ballot box by Preval and has remained mute on Preval’s obvious and illegal moves to fix the vote – once again.

  1. What an insult to the Haitian people and the American tax payers By the way where is his sidekick? (Mr Haiti initiative)
is he preoccupied counting his commissions from the Haiti
reconstruction funds and the eminent domain with out any concern for the election and the cholera crisis.

  2. I just read on BBC:
the UN predict that in the next 60 years, all african counties will triple in populations and 80% will certainly be city dwellers.
Can someone tell me what is the meaning of that?
what is the task of the UN for the world?
how is the UN changing the world for better?
Is there at least one country on this planet that the UN have brought a better change to?
It is sad to read thing like this when I know that there is a massive UN presence on my soil with the only mission to stay and maintain the statuquo and with the full support of native governors like those we have today and that are going to install Jude Celestin on the presidencail chair, they have just made it.
Dear homelike, we have lost, and the UN have prevailed cause, there is absolutely no way Haiti can fight with the USA who own the UN and has imposed that evil force on poor nations with the mission of stepping on their neck to keep them in the ground.
hate me ,call me terrorist or put me on the blacklist if you want, but God knows and you know that haitians like are not stupid and that is why they always neutralize us.
Only God can help Haiti, but agian my people prefer the Voudoo.
I guess I am just writing futile lines.
