PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — A police spokesman in Haiti says one person has been killed and 120 others revelers have been injured in accidents and in street clashes during Carnival festivities.

Gary Desrosiers of the Haitian police force says the most of the injuries stemmed from skirmishes in the streets of Les Cayes. He says a 29-year-old man died when he fell and was crushed by a Carnival truck.

Government officials estimate 300,000 people took part in this year’s Carnival, which for the first time in memory was held outside Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince.

Organizers opted to hold Carnival in the southern coastal city of Les Cayes because a settlement camp in downtown Port-au-Prince still houses thousands of people displaced by the 2010 earthquake.

It is time for the Haitian Government to take appropriate steps against local and foreign journalists who present biased, and false views of Haitian events. There are certain reporting  requirements that must be met – without violating the so-called freedom of the press. There is also a requirement for honest of the press.

Associated Press has always operated outside the honesty of the press requirement, biasing information to meet some other agenda….and the reader, not knowing anything about Haiti, accepts the printed material as “fact.” After all – it was written by AP!!

Haiti police: 1 dead, 120 injured after street fighting during Carnival celebration

Read this headline to anyone and ask what it means. They will tell you that there was one dead and 129 injured in street fighting, making the Les Cayes Carnival something one would expect in New York or Los Angeles, violent environments.

I was at the Les Cayes Carnival and was surprised at how peaceful things can be with almost 500,000 people crowded together, and I mean – crowded together. The one dead was a poor guy who fell under the wheels of a generator, towed behind one of the music floats. The real police report mentioned a couple of fist fights – with minor injuries. The rest of the people, carried by ambulances to hospital, suffered the effects of heat prostration or too much alcohol.

Come of Associated Press, especially Trenton Daniel. Let’s give Haiti a break and tell the Truth, for a change. Your predecessor, under Aristide, was more a PR operator for that government, than a reporter of the news.
