Irish charity for Haiti Haven seeks volunteers to build sustainable communities

Haven, a Irish non-governmental, non-political, non religious organization working to build sustainable communities through the provision of housing, and emergency relief and by implementing community development programs in Haiti, is hosting an informational meeting at Rory Dolan’s, 890 McLean Avenue in Yonkers, on Tuesday, September 18 at 6:30 p.m.

At the meeting, Haven will seek to recruit volunteers to travel to Haiti from November 24-December 1.   Each volunteer must raise $5,000 in order to participate and will travel to Haiti for a week to work alongside the Haitian workforce and build houses for some of the poorest of the poor.

Training is a key element of Haven’s programs, and critical to its success. To date Haven has trained over 3,000 Haitians in construction, agriculture, hygiene promotion, water and sanitation and solar power installation and maintenance.

Haven currently employs expatriate and local staff members who are based across Haiti, in Port au Prince, Gonaives, and Ouanaminthe on a full time basis.

To date, Haven has also brought over 1,300 Irish volunteers to Haiti to assist with the building of houses through their Build It Week program. In 2011, Haven opened an office in the U.S.
