Demonstrators in Haiti’s capital have burned a pickup truck and a car during a protest over gasoline prices and are threatening disrupt Carnival celebrations if the costs don’t come down more.

Participants in Thursday’s demonstration also set fire to tires and threw rocks, while police responded with tear gas.

A larger protest is planned for Saturday, and organizers are urging businesses to close and calling for people from all sectors to participate.

Haiti’s Carnival will be held this year starting Feb. 15 in Port-au-Prince.

Students and other protesters warn that they will disrupt the celebrations if gasoline prices are not lowered more because of worldwide slump in oil prices. The government has recently made two reductions, decreasing the price from $4.75 a gallon to just over $4.
