The situation is a dangerous an inflammatory one as Martelly’s planned July Carnival moves closer. His popularity is suffering as his government fails to deliver on its campaign promises and people see the Martelly inner circle stuffing their pockets with cash badly needed for Haiti’s survival.
Martelly’s wife Sophie, is one of the key problems as she insists on controlling all dossiers for projects. No cash on the table – no action. Many good projects dies at birth because the sponsors refuse to pay Sophie a fee/bribe or whatever it is called nowadays.
President Martelly has placed his 22 year old son, Olivier, in charge of sports and sports construction. Recently, a heavy-hitter, from the States made an appointment with Olivier to discuss a multi-million dollar project.
Martelly said…”You have five minutes.” Meaning that the foreigner could have a mere 5 minutes of the child’s time.
The foreigner, representing a dozen major league baseball players, each willing to write a check for a million or more, said that he had come to discuss baseball, and Haiti. Olivier said…”I don’t like baseball.” Ending the conversation before the five minutes had even begun.
Unbelievable, but true.
Is it too late for Martelly to control his inner circle and preserve his Presidency?? Rumor sees the US Government wanting to arrest some leading drug dealers, a move blocked by Martelly himself.
It is not in Haiti’s best interests to see Martelly fail, but there are limits. He is rapidly approaching these and then patience will end.
Carnival will present an opportunity for Martelly opponents to create a very big incident. Millions of people, on the streets, could provide the basis for a very destructive mob – if the fuse is lit.
