The Group A pair may be rooted to the bottom of the standings with a single point, but second place is well within reach for Haiti and Honduras. Why? Because Panama, second with two points, must find a way to earn a result against the United States in the nightcap, something history says is unlikely.

HOPE FOR HAITI: Why not us? That’s how Marc Collat and the Les Grenadiers view the opportunity that awaits them Monday night in Group A. Second place is well within reach, Honduras haven’t won in five matches and the Haitians nearly sprung a historic result against the United States.

“The Americans created fewer chances than we did but they were more effective,” Haiti boss Marc Collat said after that 1-0 loss. Chances are all well and good, but this time around Haiti need to be the more effective team to escape a strong group in which few favored them.

HONDURAS FACE MUST-WIN: Only one result will do for Honduras, and that’s a victory that would, mostly likely, send them to a second-place finish in the group and a matchup with Mexico or Trinidad & Tobago. Here’s the full breakdown, the possibilities result by result. In five previous meetings with the islanders, the Central Americans have won four and lost one, history they hope speaks to the future as well.

Jorge Luis Pinto was the target of ire from his Panamanian counterpart after the two team’s 1-1 draw, but he won’t care who calls him out should his side find a way through to the quarterfinals. And if they do find their way through and draw Mexico, Honduras can draw on a 0-0 draw in the lead up to the Gold Cup for inspiration.
