MARBIAL, Haiti (defend.ht) – Police in the Sud-Est have arrested 29 year old mother Andre-Marc Chery and are searching for a hougan named Wilber Louverture after four of Chery’s children, aged 15 months to 7 years old, were found dead Friday morning.
Police say single mother of four, Andre-Marc Chery, brought the hougan (Vodou priest) to their home to produce medicine for her children who had fallen ill.
The children, three girls and a boy named, Mirlande, 7, Tony, 4, Sophiana, 3, Florana, 1, took the medicine of the hougan the night before and had gone to sleep according to the testimony given to the police. But the police say two of the children had both their eyes gouged and all had contusions on their body and signs of trauma on their faces.
The mother has not given police any further information and is said to not be cooperating, the police spokesman Jacques Petit denounced. Justice officials gave warrant for the police to arrest and hold the mother of the slain children as the investigation continues.
Police searched the home of Hougan Wilber Louverture where he was not found and whereabouts are unknown. Justice officials have granted a warrant of arrest for Louverture.
The spokesman for the police department of nearby Jacmel says investigators are not able to rule out the possibility of other participants in the crime, which has not yet been declared man slaughter or murder.
Petit says the mother, who sleeps in the same room as the children, has complicated the investigation by not being able to declare if the hougan is responsible. The mother has gone so far as to suggest the possibility of unknown individuals entering the home, after all were asleep, and committing the acts.
