Haiti Elects Interim President After Political Unrest- Added COMMENTARY By Haitian-Truth

The former head of Parliament Jocelerme Privert must confirm a consensus prime minister when the time is up.

A week after Haiti’s president stepped down amid political unrest, the Haitian Parliament on Sunday elected a new interim president, CNN writes.

Jocelerme Privert, the former head of Parliament who served as interior minister under former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, will lead the country for 120 days. After that, he must confirm a consensus prime minster, the report says.

The election came a week after former President Michel Martelly stepped down after accusations of corruption and living a lavish lifestyle in the impoverished nation.

Elections are scheduled to take place on April 24, with the winner to be confirmed on May 14, the report says.

Privert vowed to engage all sectors in dialogue to complete the elections after an evaluation of the fraud allegations, and hand over to an elected president by May 14. Elections are set for April 24 under the deal struck last week.

After Aristide, a former Salesian priest, was forced from power by armed rebels in 2004, Privert was thrown into prison for two years on charges he organised a massacre of the president’s opponents. The charges were later dropped.

One of the major challenges ahead will be to reach an agreement about who can participate in the election, with many parties rejecting the October results that led to a two-man race between opposition candidate Jude Celestin and ruling party favourite Jovenel Moise.

New elections are scheduled to take place on April 24, with the winner to be confirmed on May 14, according to the reports.

Charges against Privert, in the La Scerie Massacre Case, were never dropped. They were never dismissed. They were never dealt with. No one moved forward with the charges, based on solid evidence. Privert is as guilty now as he was in 2004.

Privert’s madate – now – is to complete the existing electoral process, not create a new one. The following paragraph, from this article, indicates he is about to change the game.

There is nothing wrong with the results. The two leading candidates were Celestin and Jovenel Moise. Aristide’s candidate got 7%.


Expect to see Privert, with the Palace he has now loaded with Lavalas people, to decide upon something outside this agreement. He will move to create HIS OWN CEP and this will validate his goals. Aristide was first to understand control of the CEP gives control of Haiti – forget elections!


Martelly allowed an election without his control of CEP. Opont was a Boulos man.


Jovenel must mobilize the vast peasant majority. He can’t win without the rest of our population. Haiti’s survival depends on this
