Fuel cheaper in Haiti than in Dominican Republic

Haiti - Economy : Fuel cheaper in Haiti than in Dominican Republic

After 3 days of strikes in public transport that paralyzed in violence the socio-economic activities , the National Platform of Unions Transport Faithful (PNSTF) bringing together twenty public transport unions in Port-au-Prince and in provincial cities, threatens to resume the mobilization after the National Carnival, if fuel prices do not drop of 100 gourdes.

Yet fuel price analysis (and their structure) between Haiti and the Dominican Republic demonstrates with supporting figures, than gasoline and diesel are cheaper in Haiti than in neighboring country.

Recall that the price of petroleum products in Haiti, as in all countries is an administered price. The pricing structure is a framework designed on the basis of legal and regulatory provisions allowing calculation of prices of petroleum products at the pump. It includes all duties, taxes, margins, fees and costs incurred on the occasion of the marketing of products. This structure is prepared at each import.

The decision of the Government of Haiti, to freeze prices at the pump since March 2011 to October 9, 2014, despite the rise in oil prices on the international market, has resulted in subsidies (uncollected revenue and funding) of the order of 19 billion gourdes.

The difference in lowest prices in Haiti, with the Dominican Republic was so important that it has encouraged the Dominican to source abusively in petroleum product in Haiti. The price increase at the pump envisaged on October 10, 2014 has reduced the price difference of the two countries.
The following tables (source Government of Haiti), allow to compare the prices of petroleum products (after the application of reductions in Haiti ) applied during this week on the Haitian and Dominican markets.
