FIFA presidential candidate defends Haiti donations

Dr Chung Mong-joon, one of the candidates for president of FIFA, is defending payments he made to Haiti, claiming them to be charitable donations following the 2010 earthquake that rocked the country, leaving more than 200,000 dead and even more homeless in the wake of its destruction.

The presidential candidate is allegedly being investigated by FIFA for donations  he made during that period to Haiti and to Pakistan.

The South Korean billionaire is contending that if there is indeed an investigation, FIFA should be condemned for misrepresenting ‘even charitable donations for political manipulation’.

Chung launched his bid for FIFA’s top job earlier this week and started by launching a scathing attack on outgoing president Josef Sepp Blatter and his opponent, UEFA boss Michel Platini.

According to Chung, the payments to Haiti were no secret, with him announcing the personal donation during a Grand National Party meeting.

Chung also asserts that there were other donations before that, which he said comes from his work with charity organisation Asan Foundation, pointing to tsunamis in Indonesia and Sri Lanka and the 2005 Pakistan earthquake.
