El Salvador, Honduras to headline Gold Cup games at Compass

El Salvador and Honduras, two Central American nations with large followings in Houston, will likely have home-field advantages when they anchor a Gold Cup group stage doubleheader at BBVA Compass Stadium on July 15.

El Salvador will play Haiti, and Honduras will face Trinidad and Tobago in the Gold Cup matches.

It’s unclear whether Honduras will send its A squad to the Gold Cup because Los Catrachos will use their best squad for World Cup qualifying matches in June. But if Honduras brings its top squad, Dynamo star Boniek Garcia will likely be in the Group B match against Trinidad and Tobago.

Honduras and El Salvador are likely to be favored in Group B.

The Gold Cup kicks off July 7 with Mexico (Group A) facing Panama in a doubleheader at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

The U.S. (Group C) will play on July 9 in Portland against Belize and square off with Cuba on July 13 in Sandy, Utah.

The semifinals are at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on July 21, and the final is at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 28.
