EDMOND MULET SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE OF UN SECRETARY GENERAL DUMPS HAITI’S CONSTITUTION: SAYS PREVAL CAN STAY IN PRESIDENCY FOR AS LONG AS PREVAL WANTS

May 7, 2010, 1300 hours

To the uninitiated, this might seem like a simple case of naive foreign interference in a nation’s sovereignty. In case you have just tuned in, Edmond Mullet was head of the MINUSTAH in 2006, as Preval was finally installed in May, after a long, criminal charade in which votes were juggled to give Preval the 51% required to avoid  a run-off. Preval got 23% of the vote before the crime. He would have lost this to the opposition.

Those involved with the challenge to Haiti’s survival, and sovereignty,  were Mulet’s predecessor, Chile’s Juan Gabriel Valdez, along with MINUSTAH military commanders from Brazil and Chile.

Mulet was paid a substantial sum, for his ongoing  interference, while the Brazilian and Chilean representatives were promised certain advantages over the coming term. Brazil, for example, has received many lucrative contracts that could have put Haitians to work, moving rubble with trucks. Instead, we have seen an influx of Brazilians to take jobs that are rightfully those of Haiti’s people.  The January 12 quake killed Mulet’s replacement and allowed Mulet an opportunity to return to the scene of his earlier crime.

  1. I spent a number of hours, interviewing Mr. Mulet on a number of occasions. He was always very enthusiastic about his promotion of President Preval and had very, very low opinions of the other Haitian political leaders.

Perhaps there was some justification of this since the other people were not what I would consider really competent.

Having said that, I believe that Mr. Mulet was anything but neutral in his handling of the situation. His approach was that of a Preval promoter and not that expected of the UN head of MINUSTAH.

I have observed the Preval presidency and felt very sad for my Haitians friends who have suffered from the man’s incompetence. I feel sorry for the country in general since the foreigner has never really addressed Haiti’s problems with Haiti in mind.

They always seem to be satisfying foreign requirements, not those of Haiti.

  2. Interesting and good stuff. Keep it coming. I am always interested in the story
