President Martelly had just installed some judges, opened Carnival and decided to walk across to the Department of Ethnology, a government institution operating on government funds, under Martelly’s Minister of Education.
Because President Martelly had not given advanced warning of his visit, students blocked the entrance. Large volumes of tear gas were spread, as a result. Some students were bloodied and numbers of automobiles destroyed by the students.
This is a grave provocation and Aristide supporters warned of the event, well before it happened, saying it was controlled by Aristide.
Others suggest a Mirlande Manigat/Preval hand in the pie.
Whoever is responsible, it was a provocative gesture and may be the prelude to some serious student unrest, The students, one of the only structured elements to coordinate manifestations, have been used for generations.
The Martelly/Conille government is facing some rough waters.
Now is the time for public statements, to the effect that – should they wish a return to the Aristide/Preval situation, this is the way to arrive there.
Things will get worse before they get better.
Carnival was already headed for disaster. This may be the first step to guarantee this!!
