Santo Domingo.- Although their number is still unknown, many of the 329 Haitian inmates who broke out from a prison near the capital Port-au-Prince Sunday managed to sneak across the border into Dominican territory, military and police officials revealed Thursday.

The mass escape has prompted Dominican military and police, already under heightened alert, to launch a major operation to capture the fugitives.

Citing intelligence reports, Dominican police chief Manuel Castro and Army commander Ruben Dario Paulino said part of the group that escaped from Croix-des- Bouquets prison crossed into Dominican territory through several points of the border, despite bolstered surveillance.

Castro revealed expanded search areas to locate and apprehend the fugitives, including Santo Domingo. “The task of intelligence already identified areas to conduct searches, raids and execute arrests warrants against some of the fugitives.”
